Wordless research

My chosen opposite themes are: Rich/Poor

The photographer I chose is James Mollison and I looked at the project called 'Where children sleep'. This particular photography shows these two opposite themes really well.

The artist I chose to look at for my theme 'Rich' is Hans Holbein the Younger.

The artist I chose to look at for my theme 'Poor' is Robert Kemm. His painting is called 'Alms for the poor'.

Proposal

For this project I would like to do a split screen video of the opposites rich and poor. For the poor theme, I want to video things like run down buildings/areas, litter, graffiti and broken glass. For the rich theme I would like to video things like expensive shops, like Harvey Nichols and Rolex, pile of money, banks and clean areas.

I want to make it a horizontal split screen and have some kind of music playing in the background of the videos instead of having the sounds I already caught taking these videos.

Practise video

I made a practise video out of clips provided to us just so I could get the hang of using Premiere.
I think this video could be improved though, I think I should add more effects to the clips and maybe some music.

Making my video

At first I wanted to do a horizontal split screen of my videos, having the rich ones at the bottom and the poor ones at the top. But then I decided I would have a 4 way split screen, having rich and poor ones playing at completely different times. I think this looks more effective.

When I came to adding a track over the top, I wanted something that fully represents my videos. So I decided I would have someone talking about their lottery win and have that playing through one headphone, then a news report on unemployment playing through the other headphone. This way you can hear them both at the same time as well as seeing the videos at the same time. Also, if you wanted to listen to one story separate you can do that by taking out one earphone.

Evaluation

I chose to base my videos around rich and poor for my videoing because I thought it would be interesting because everyone would video different things and this is my interpretation.
I looked at things like torn down/demolished buildings and banks to show the differences between the themes.

Reflecting on my proposal I think I have achieved everything I wanted to, apart from the way the video is displayed. Originally I wanted to do a horizontal split screen but then when I was creating my video I didn't like it that much and wanted to try something different. So I decided I would fill my screen with 4 videos and have them playing all at different times so it looks like it's flicking from one video to another  instead of having them playing at exactly the same time.
